Quick take
- Tap a card or phone to unlock, grab what you want, close the door.
- AI cameras identify what left the cooler and charge the card automatically.
- Fully cashless, with its own cellular connection. No Wi-Fi needed.
- Locked between visits, so it works in public and shared spaces.
How a purchase works
The shopper taps a credit card, debit card, or phone wallet on the reader. Once the payment method is approved, the door unlocks. They can take one item or several, and put things back if they change their mind.
When the door closes, it locks again. Cameras inside the cooler identify which products left, and the card is charged for just those items, usually within about a minute.
How it knows what you took
Cameras mounted inside the cabinet watch the shelves while the door is open. The software recognizes each product by its packaging and tracks items taken and returned. Manufacturers commonly cite accuracy around 99 percent, and every visit is recorded, so the occasional question about a charge is easy to check.
Payments and connection
Smart coolers are cashless: chip and tap cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. There's no cash box and no coin mechanism.
Most units have a built-in cellular connection, so they don't need your Wi-Fi or any IT setup. A standard 110V outlet is the only utility required.
What about theft?
The door stays locked until a valid payment method is approved, and each visit is tied to that card. With no cash inside, there's nothing to break into. That's why smart coolers are a popular choice for lobbies, gyms, and other spaces where an open market wouldn't make sense.
What it can hold
Cold drinks, snacks, sandwiches, salads, yogurt, fruit, and protein items. A typical single-door unit has six adjustable shelves, and double-door and freezer models are available for more variety or frozen meals.
Common questions
Do customers need to download an app?
No. A card or phone wallet is all it takes.
Will I see a hold on my card?
Depending on the bank, a temporary pending amount may appear when the door unlocks. It is replaced by the actual total for what you took.
